The Righteous Mind explains why intelligent and sincere people can hold completely different moral, political and religious beliefs. Jonathan Haidt argues that moral judgement usually begins with intuition-an immediate feeling that something is right or wrong-and reasoning often comes later to justify that feeling. He identifies several moral foundations, including care, fairness, loyalty, authority, sanctity and liberty. Different political and cultural groups give different importance to these foundations. The book encourages readers to understand the moral concerns of opponents instead of assuming that disagreement results from stupidity, ignorance or wickedness.

  1. Moral intuition usually comes first: People frequently reach a moral conclusion before consciously reasoning about it.
  1. Reasoning often works like a lawyer: The mind commonly searches for arguments that defend a decision already made intuitively.
  1. Care focuses on suffering: This moral foundation values kindness, protection and compassion for vulnerable people.
  1. Fairness concerns justice: People care about equal treatment, proportional rewards, honesty and protection from cheating.
  1. Loyalty values group commitment: Families, communities and nations often expect members to support and defend one another.
  1. Authority supports social order: Respect for legitimate leadership, tradition and hierarchy can strengthen coordination.
  1. Sanctity protects what is considered sacred: Religious and cultural communities may treat certain practices, places or values as morally pure.
  1. Political groups use moral foundations differently: Progressives and conservatives may emphasize different moral concerns rather than possessing morality versus immorality.
  1. Understanding reduces polarization: Listening for the moral values behind an opponent’s position can make political discussion more productive.
  1. Important quotation: “Intuitions come first, strategic reasoning second.”
